Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips 4-Cup Fat Separator

Customer Review: Awesome Tool for Removing Fats from any Cooking Liquids
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this fat separating measuring cup a few months ago and it has been a fantastic help in the kitchen. I honestly don't know how I lived without it before (I used to skim fat out of the pan with a spoon during cooking which is a pain in the neck).

This is the perfect size to separate pan juice or slow cooker juices to make gravy, and will allow you to get all of the flavor from drained meat, vegetables, and pasta without including the fat.

Some reviews have said that the fat does not separate correctly, but I have found that if the stopper is used as the instructions state, it works perfectly. Also, I have not had any problems with cleaning. Rinse the cup with hot water and a little bit of dish soap and then run it through your dishwasher on the top rack and it comes out sparkling every time.

Customer Review: I had my doubts, but now I'm a believer!

I was a bit skeptical about whether or not this separator would actually work. I'm happy to say it does a fantastic job and I'm so glad I bought it. My last separator did not have a plunger and I had to wait quite a while for the fat to rise, then pour very carefully to keep the fat from coming out. What a pain. The design of the OXO separator is so simple, but works immediately and so well. As at least one other reviewer already mentioned, be sure to have the plunger in place before adding your liquid.

While I don't consider this a design flaw at all, I do find the holes in the strainer/lid to be a bit larger than I would like for some applications. When necessary, I just add a few layers of fine cheesecloth over the strainer/lid. Problem solved.

Customer Review: excellent separator with high quality and low price
Summary: 5 Stars

I liked the Oxo 4 cup separator enough to give one to each of my adult children for Christmas. The Oxo solves every problem I had with my old 2 cup separator which was too small and did not have a plug or strainer. The Oxo's wide mouth makes filling it from a hot roasting pan hassle free. The strainer eliminates the need to pour the hot liquid twice (once to strain and once to separate). The plug works exactly as advertised leaving the neck fat free. The 4 cup size is more than sufficient for both turkeys and roasts.

I have even started using the Oxo for chicken stock which I make frequently. I usually make eight to twelve cups of stock at a time. My solution was to just borrow the additional Oxo's from my children.

Customer Review: At long last
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased the fat separator mostly because of the brand name, Oxo, as I am rarely disappointed with their products. Truthfully, I didn't expect anything special but with the holidays approaching and lots of company expected, I thought I would at least give it a try. The day it arrived, I just happened to have a small roast in the oven and figured it would be a perfect time to try it. I poured the drippings from the roast into the Oxo container and then into a small bowl. Everything came out at once and nothing separated! Remembering the old saying, "If at once you don't succeed, try, try again, so I did something clever, like reading the instructions and Wow! it worked. A great product that really and truly works!

Customer Review: Yes, you'll be glad you bought this

This has made my cooking life so much easier! When I make large pots of broth or stock I can de-grease it two cups at a time with no hassle. Also, I always serve roasts 'au jus' from pan juices and never make gravy. Collecting pan juices in the gravy separator make de-fatting them easy, then I just 'decant' the good stuff, adjust the seasoning, serve. Use the black stopper--if you don't, a little layer of fat shows up in the spout. The fat may not bother you, but it does make the spout tougher to clean. BTW, I really don't like the drudgery of daily cooking, but I've got a family of 4, so I really mean it when I say it makes kitchen time easier and food more healthy by removing extra fat.
