If you can't decide whether to get the 3 or 5 quart Oxo colander, ask yourself if you ever cook a pound of pasta. If so, make sure to order the 5 quart! The 5 quart colander, to me, is not too big at all. Virtually nothing slips through the holes, and it is easy to clean. I would not recommend using the dishwasher, as it can picks up little bits of food-uggh! It has a good height, and the food doesn't escape over the top. It has proven very sturdy, even after I have abused it by slinging it into the sink. I feel almost guilty about not giving it a five star rating. I wish the handles were larger. If you are not very careful, your knuckles will rest against the hot colander. To me, it's not that easy to get a good grip on a heavy colander without resting your knuckles against the metal. As said by other reviewers, this OXO colander is well made, and easy to clean. It is big enough and sturdy enough to handle a large amount of fruit or pasta without buckling. Besides which the rubber feet prevent the bowl from coming into direct contact with the sink.
This heavy duty strainer would be perfect except for one fact. The holes are spaced too far apart and there is ALWAYS water left in the bottom. With fruit it doesn't really matter, but when it comes to food that require a thorough draining, I have to tilt the strainer all the while trying not to let the food fall out. This defeats the whole purpose of using a colander.
Mesh strainers may be more difficult to clean but they drain more thoroughly... I will keep the OXO colander, but will buy a mesh one as well.
