I loooove cheese, so I need a grater that can handle a pound or two with ease. The hand graters may take up less space, but take a lot more energy to use and are not versatile. Plus the box grater's flat sides make for much better grating surfaces than the curved hand graters usually have.
Like all OXO good grips products, this grater has comfortable handles, and a practicle, but very attractive design. The steel is sturdy, stain and scratch resistant. No problems sticking this in the dishwasher, though you should take off the removable rubber rim on the bottom of the grater first and make sure all pieces are dry before reassembling and storing.
I didn't think I would like or use the plastic container, but again, OXO's talent for design wins out. The container is a good size for most meals serving 2-5 people, and just slap on some saran wrap to store for in the fridge for later. I haven't tried anything but cheese yet, however the grater seems quite sharp enough to handle most gratables. I like the slimmish form of the grater and it is the right size for ease of grating and storage.

I used this to replace my "had seen better days", rusted-out, old box grater. Wow, what a difference. Of course, you may say that any grater would be better than the old one, which may be true, but the old one still did a decent job of grating, otherwise it would not have been around so long! This one does a spectacular job of grating, and I love the comfortable handle. It is very easy on my hand, especially when grating a hard cheese or a hard vegetable, like a potato or carrot. The small box at the bottom is handy, also, although it does just hold a small amount of grated product, so I haven't had an opportunity to use it much. The stainless steel construction is a must! No more rusty grater, for me. I was definitely surprised to be able to purchase a grater of this quality, at such a reasonable price. I don't cook, but I like to help. The only thing my wife trusts me with is grating cheese. My problems in the past have been two fold.
1. i am a large guy and I almost always bend the handle of the past graters which means they dont last long.
2. i tend so spill cheese everywhere when I lift up the grater.
I dont have either problem with the OXO BOx Grater. It is well made and durable enough for me 6'3 290 pds. I have not bent it yet. Also the box does a good job of collecting and cuts back on my spillage by about 20%. You will still have some cheese that escapes you so make sure you grate on top of a plate.
This is a good buy and a solid product.

I purchased this based on a review by Cooks Magazine. It is everything I need in a grater. First off, it grates very well. Beyond that it has some excellent design features. The handle is very comfortable to grip and the bottom ring keeps it secure on the counter top. It is very easy to clean as your hand with a sponge fits easily inside. The cup has a lid and is a handy addition for grating and then storing. The best thing is that the cup with its lid fits up inside the grater for storage. A real plus for people with limited space like me. This is my 3rd or 4th grater purchase and don't think I will need another one for a very long time.Customer Review: Easy to use and clean

I've used this for grating cheese so far. It is a breeze to grate soft and hard cheeses alike. And the clean up, by hand no less, has been super easy. My previous two box graters were a real pain to get completely clean of food. So far this takes a good scrub once on the inside and out and the food comes away, then rinse. I am sure it would do well with vegetables too; I don't generally use shredded veggies.
It is slightly less steady when using the measuring cup but not enough that I would reduce my rating. I also love that the cup stores inside the grater so it fits in my cabinet vertically.
