Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips Corn Stripper

Customer Review: Update from earlier review - Still works great!
Summary: 5 Stars

I reviewed this back in June, and I wanted to give an update. After cutting through about 12 dozen ears of corn to freeze, this corn cutter is still sharp, and it's still so easy to use. The corn cobs do tend to slip after the cutting area gets wet, so I resorted to butting one end of the cob up against the long side of a 9X13 baking dish that I placed next to my stomach, and I then pulled the cutter towards me. It's so fast and leaves nearly no corn on the cob. I cut through and bagged 24 ears of corn in about fifteen minutes with only a dirty 9X13 dish and some stray corn juice to clean up! Of course, this 15 minutes doesn't include the time I spent shucking, removing silk, and blanching.

Also, cutter doesn't seem to work well on limp cobs of corn. I bought some corn from the store that wasn't very fresh. I had to hold the cobs in my left hand and cut from the middle of the cob out because when I tried to cut the other way, from one end to the other, the cob would bend and the cutter would get "snagged" in the kernels.

This cutter is very sharp, and I've nipped my finger one time while cleaning it because I wasn't paying attention. I have not cut any fingers while using it.

Customer Review: THIS GADGET IT REALLY WORKS
Summary: 5 Stars

I accidentally ordered two of these which made me so mad because I really didn't think the cutter would work as well as the video claims. Now that I've tried it, I'm glad I have two because I never want to be without one again for as long as I live! My husband grows me bushels of sweet corn each year that I like to freeze. Most of the corn I have to freeze on the cob because the wooden Lee Corn cutter that I've been using for years only creams the corn, which my husband loves but my son hates. Cutting all that corn off the cob with a knife would be a nightmare, and messy too. So I've been freezing a lot of the corn on the cob, and I cut it off for my son with a knife as I cook it throughout the year. What a pain! The corn on the cobs takes up so much room in my freezer. This year I can finally freeze cut corn and creamed corn without having to make room for the cobs! This gadget also isn't messy like the Lee corn cutter, and its container will hold the kernels from two pieces of corn before I have to empty it. I hope it stays sharp because, as of today, it glides through the kernels like butter. I actually cut the kernels off in seconds, just like the video. Compare that to a knife!

Customer Review: I really like this product
Summary: 5 Stars

I first heard of the Oxo Corn Stripper through America's Test Kitchen, where they tested a variety of corn strippers and recommended this one. It's not THAT big of a deal to have a corn stripper - because it isn't that difficult to use a knife and because if you're making corn pudding or something where you need the "milk," you still have to grate the corn and scrape it with the back of a butter knife afterward anyway. However, I would imagine that this is very nice if you're making a LOT of corn, and I must say it was nice and fun to use. It is mostly very neat and tidy. It keeps the kernels in the cup, and though you'll still have maybe 30 kernels on the cutting board, 99% of them are contained. Thanks to the warnings here, I was careful and didn't feel that I could cut myself the way I was using the product. It has a sharp blade and does a good job. If you like gadgets and/or like keeping the kitchen clean, or have to grate a LOT of corn, you will like this.

Customer Review: Best Corn Stripper Ever
Summary: 5 Stars

This works like a charm! I can strip 60 ears of sweet corn in about half an hour, and I get nice whole kernels, not a bunch of half kernels and tons of milk. No need to scrape the ears, either!

I find it easier to strip the ears over a plate, then every third ear or so I empty the stripper and clean off the plate into my pot. Gives you more room to maneuver. Also, if you angle in the stripper toward the cob a bit, you get more kernel cut off -- just be careful not to angle too much or you dig into the cob and you have to stop and reset your angle.

ALSO, for the folks that have complained about getting cut -- if you're careful and keep your hands out of the way, you don't get cut. I've yet to cut myself, and I've put up 80 pints of corn so far...

Customer Review: Take it from this Southern Boy and current Illinois resident!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Born and raised int he south, corn is somewhat of a Summertime obsession for me. Now that I live in Illinois, its even more so. I bought this item because of all the splatter and mess that comes with using a knife or mandolin to remove kernels from the cob. Once again OXO comes through with a wonderfully simple and efficient product. There is still some splatter, but I don't have to wash down the walls and floor when I'm done. Four strokes down a cob and all kernels are off! The first time I used it I was actually speechless for a moment. Surely it couldn't be THAT easy, can it? Well, it is!
A great kitchen gadget and okay, its a unitasker, but its one I can live with. Do be careful of the blades though, they are sharp!
