Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips Food Mill

Customer Review: well made, sturdy mill
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently got into ricing mashed potatoes with a ricer and decided to try a food mill to compare the two.

Why a food mill: It is quicker than a single ricer because it holds more and the cranking of the mill is easier than pressing down on the ricer. The blades of the mill press down on the grid-pushing through any food in the way. The blades are not sharp; the grids are rough but not sharp. This one has interchangeable discs that broadens the usage to other foods (like applesauce). You turn the crank clockwise and it begins the pressing process. Occasionally the mill will clog and will need you to either rotate the crank to the left for a few turns, or possibly scrape the sides or empty the mill. Potatoes come out soft and fluffy and lump free--perfect! A food mill is NOT the same as a food processor--i.e. you cannot chop, grind or blend in one! It is meant to crush and puree/strain/ricer soft items like cooked mashed potatoes, apples, tomatoes etc. If you want to chop nuts, fruits etc, you will not want a food mill.

Why this food mill: The ratings were good on Amazon, and I believe it stands up to the ratings. It is a very sturdy, well constructed stainless steel with a plastic or enamel outer coating. The blades and grids are also very sturdy. The grid holes are punched out and slightly rough to the touch. This helps grasp food and pull it through the holes. Other mills I looked out were smooth and I believe this would cause the food to "slip" away from the holes and clog the mill quicker. The blades are concave--they are marked which side to put up facing you--the pointed part faces up towards you. This allows the blades to gently scrape the grid as it turns.

This mill has rubberized feet that fold outwards and and allows the mill to sit across the top of a bowl--a great feature that allows you to rest the mill on the bowl and use both hands to process. As mentioned, the interchangeable discs broaden the usage beyond that of only potatoes. There is a fine, medium and coarse. The handle is OXO, soft and comfortable to hold even during long sessions. The crank turns easily and feels very sturdy. There are minimal but good instructions and a few suggestions as to which disc to use for which job.

The mill disassembles for clean up. I would recommend cleaning it right away to avoid dried up potatoes in the grid. The clean up is easy on the stainless steel parts, but is more work than a simple ricer.

All in all, I would recommend a food mill over a ricer for long milling sessions or if you do more than mashed potatoes. A ricer may be better for one person or smaller amounts. (less clean up)

This is a top notch mill and I recommend it if you are in the market for one.

Customer Review: Works Great and Good Value
Summary: 5 Stars

I have now used my OXO Good Grips food mill twice to make mashed potatoes and I am very pleased with everything about this food mill -- especially for the price. Years ago, I had an inexpensive plastic mill that was difficult to use and collected dust like a magnet. I finally got rid of it. But as I became more and more involved with developing my cooking techniques, I read so much about the importance of having a food mill. Recently I received an email from Williams Sonoma announcing a brand new All Clad food mill for the whopping sum of $150! I was curious, and love All Clad cookware, so I checked it out. It looked really great, but the price tag felt exorbitant. Then I noticed that WS also sold the OXO for literally one-third the price. There was a long list of five-star reviews for the OXO. I compared features and determined that the only big difference, in addition to a slightly larger size for the All Clad, was that the OXO didn't have the little "wiper" blade at the bottom that the All Clad has, making it necessary to occasionally lift the OXO and scrape the bottom with a spatula. Well, for a saving of $100 I figured that little difference was something I was willing to live with.

I immediately checked Amazon and found a slightly better price and more 5-star reviews. I have now used it a couple of times for mashed potatoes, using the coarse disk, and they were wonderful. Light and fluffy. The assembly of the OXO was easy and intuitive. The disks even have "this side up" imprinted on them. The turner assembly clicked right in, and the knob on the handle was very comfortable to hold. There was no drag at all as the blade spun around to push the food through the disk and the potatoes were done in less than half the time it normally took me with a recommended potato ricer. That goes to my neighbor.

Cleaning and storage are great, too. Everything goes in the dishwasher. The legs, which fit neatly over my All Clad mixing bowls and almost every pot I have, fold under completely for compact storage in my pots and pans drawer. And it even looks really nice, an added bonus.

Update: I made a nice batch of applesauce the other night with this mill. Perfection! It was so easy -- and the texture of the applesauce was perfection. This is definitely a quality product -- well designed, ergonomic, and it even looks good.

I highly recommend this product and can't wait to use it for more things.

Customer Review: An excellent food mill
Summary: 5 Stars

I have used a lot of food mills. Most are similar in design, but once you've used a few, you begin to see what works and what doesn't.

For example, I'll never buy another food mill that doesn't have a cross brace for the handle. (Like the first one I ever purchased) Without one, all of the torque puts tremendous strain on the rotary axle where it connects to the screen. The OXO Goodgrips unit has one. In fact, one of my only complaints about this unit has to do with the cross brace; they added a sort of 'quick connect' switch. Most food mills just use slots and tabs, and the pressure of the spring to keep it in place. That's an excellent solution because it's simple and it works. This switch clamp in my opinion is poor design because it fixed a problem that didn't exist, and added a moving part that will eventually fail where one was not needed.

A few other complaints before getting to the unit's good points. The feet could use a 'hook' shape on the ends to keep them solidly on the top of a pot. I used this on top of my biggest stock pot, and it just barely fit. I didn't have too much trouble with it 'wandering' but a little better foot design would have helped. Also, as another reviewer noted, there is no scrape wire on the bottom.

Now to the good parts. The screens (3 are included) are excellent. Some of the recently made mills that I've used have laser cut screens and they suck. You can't get any traction; the food just spins around. The holds in these screens have been punched out, and have some texture. The smallest hole screen was used to make tomato sauce this past weekend and it worked beautifully. The screens are also designed with 3 tabs that lock them in place at the bottom of the mill. It's a very solid design. The mill body is a nice gauge of steel. The handles - well, it's an OXO product - you know the handles are going to be pretty good. No surprises here, both are the most comfortable I've ever used.

Customer Review: WOW!
Summary: 5 Stars

If you are looking for a food mill that will do the job look no further. I specifically needed a mill for making apple sauce and also tomato based goodies. The Oxo has far exceeded my expectaions. I think a couple comments were made that it was on the smaller side which made me hesitate. Now that Ive had the chance to put it to "work" that hesitation is long gone.
I just finished a large batch of apple sauce with ease. I was so happy to be able to cook the apples with skins on as they do add a nice color to the finished sauce. The Oxo medium blade makes THE BEST apple sauce, not too smooth or chunky. Its amazing how only the good stuff goes into the bowl and skins, etc. stay inside the device. I was able to process a good amount before removing skins left behind. The rubber grip legs help it sit nicely on top of a bowl as well for ease in the pureeing.
Extremely easy to take apart for cleaning and very safe. None of the parts, including the disks are very sharp to the touch (not at all like food processor blades). Our 7 year-old daughter loved helping me and had no problems turning the handle.
Highly recommend the OXO 107148 Food Mill to anyone that likes to can for sure. I know I will find many more great uses for this fine product.

Customer Review: Great food mill
Summary: 5 Stars

After using a Foley mill, this one was heavenly. I use it mostly for apple butter, and I find it to be really great. Here's why:

-- The fold-out legs are really sturdy. I tend to want to mill those apple skins until they beg for mercy, because a lot of the flavor is there. I can push down on this while suspended over a pot, with no problems at all.
-- The milling action works easily. Until I get down to the skins-only stage of the milling, it requires only light pressure to mill the food.
-- It's easy to assemble and disassemble, and easy to clean.
-- The three screens are great, and I can get rid of my potato ricer now, as well as my old food mill.

There are a couple of minuses that others have mentioned:
-- The capacity of the mill itself is not large. I didn't really have a problem with that, since I would just spoon in some stuff, mill it, spoon in some more stuff, etc. Since you can put it over a much larger pot, it didn't bother me.
-- There is no scraper wire underneath. Since this makes it quieter, and all it requires it taking a spoon and scraping it once when you are done, this is a very small minus for me. I suppose if you were trying to measure the amount you'd done really accurately, this would be more annoying.

The minuses aren't minuses for me, so I'm still giving this 5 stars. I highly recommend it.
