Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips Food MillCustomer Review: Too small? Not quite. Summary: 5 Stars
With some trepidation, I ordered this food mill after reading the reviews that said it was too small. I thought to myself that it couldn't be any smaller than the traditional one-screen Foley food mills--the ones without detachable screens--and when I got it in the mail, I wondered just what the reviewers who said it was too small were talking about.
Sure, if you have one of the Roma food mills or the out-of-production Squeezo Strainer (and if you can get one of those, go for it, because they are all stainless steel and last forever) you can make a lot more. However, for smaller batches, it's so much nicer to have an easily cleaned, *large* food mill with detachable screens. Since I live alone, and sometimes just make enough for me or perhaps an experimental recipe that I don't want to initially make a lot of, this is perfect for my needs.
So if you were hesitating at the too small reviews, it is larger than the old Foley food mills. And much easier to clean as well. Go for it! :)
Customer Review: Excellent food mill. This is the one! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this mill after trying it out alongside the All Clad, and after having read the bad reviews of other high-end mills. Unlike the All-Clad, which has a fixed knob, the knob on the Oxo crank turns independently of the crank, so that you can grip it while turning without losing the skin off the palm of your hand. It's quieter than the All-clad, which makes an annoying scraping sound, and it has those awesome retractable legs that let you rest it over any bowl. With the All-Clad, you have to either use All-clad pots or hold the whole thing in your other arm as you crank away with that horrible knob. So far, I have made amazing mashed potatoes and fresh heirloom tomato Bloody Mary's. The fine mesh seive held back the seeds and skins of the tomato perfectly, which some mills won't do. If you like seeds and skin in your sauces, just use the medium seive. The disks are VERY easy to switch out, just click the latch. Lastly, the Oxo is cheaper. If you want a food mill, this is the one!
Customer Review: Works great for homemade applesauce Summary: 5 Stars
Purchased this food mill to make homemade applesauce but didn't want to spend a fortune on a food processor. Made my first two batches of applesauce and this mill really fit the bill. Was easy to use and easy to clean. I generally like all Oxo products and this one was no exception. I purchased this model over a cheaper competitor brand for the handle and the "winged feet". Both proved to be worthy details. Handle was easy on my hand while turning the crank with the other. And the feet set perfectly across a medium size stainless steel bowl with no slippage whatsoever. I sat the stainless bowl on a rubber pad on my countertop and was a perfect setup. Seems to be well made and hope to find an excuse to use again soon. I especially liked that I did not have to peel the apples and the skins separated out nicely and did not clog the mill whatsoever. I'm thinking this could work for tomatoes next summer. I plan to give it a try.
Customer Review: Easy to use, great design, recommended product! Summary: 5 Stars
I just used this for the first time making 8 quarts of applesauce. It worked wonderfully - reducing the amount of time needed for applesauce making because you only need to quarter whole apples, cook them until tender and then ladle your apples into the food mill for "processing." With this food mill there is no need to peel apples or even core them as the mill catches both of these products when you turn the crank. This made applesauce making a breeze and I cannot wait to use it for making marinara next summer! I wish it had a larger capacity as I had to disassemble frequently (which is relatively quick) to remove the seeds and skin that accumulated and then re-attach the mill crank to continue processing more apples. The rubberized legs grip the top of a bowl or saucepan nicely. I recommend this product.
Customer Review: Worth the money! Summary: 5 Stars
This item is easy to use, with fail-proof instructions. The discs are imprinted with "This Side Up" for easy installation. Some users mentioned that the mill leaves food behind. I have not had this problem. You have to crank this mill both ways to get everything you can out of the mill. The grip is comfy, the legs work perfectly for my uses and it stores easily. It is simple to clean and all parts are rust-resistant. I use this regularly for hummus, jams, sauces, and ricing potatoes and I would highly recommend this to others looking for a decent product. Those that gave this negative reviews either don't know how to use this properly or they are looking for something quick and easy, which milling is not. The OXO makes it a whole lot easier than it would be, otherwise.
