Customer Review: Not what I had hoped for

I have used many jar openers in the past, those that lock down or clamp down as you twist on them. All have worked fine. I am however disappointed with this jar opener as it has the tendency to slip and feels a bit awkward to use. Maybe it is because I am used to the jar openers that make you hold them as if you were actually trying to twist the lid off the jar itself; this one is similar to pushing a lever attached to the lid while holding the jar. I had an older version of the opener and loved it. The newer model is slightly different and more difficult to use. The grip is not as good as the older model and consequently I end up hurting my forearm and wrist trying to open jars. There aren't any teeth or the same kind to grip the lid. Unlike the previous reviewer, I like this opener. A basic, inexpensive opener that does just that, opens jars and bottles. Mine lasted for years, but ultimately went to jar opener heaven when the handle broke off mid-open.Customer Review: Warning: This Tool May Expire

This jar opener worked quite well for the first couple of months--it made the process of opening jars very easy--until it broke. I was trying to open a particularly stubborn jar of applesauce, and suddenly one of the two metal strips or "teeth" that grip the jar lids went flying across the kitchen, along with the plastic piece that was _supposed_ to hold it in place. Turns out, it was only attached by a couple of thin plastic pegs, which couldn't have been expected to survive for very long under the stresses that such a tool experiences.Customer Review: Usually works, sometimes slips. Damages the lid.

The handle sure is comfortable, just as you'd expect from OXO. Unfortunately this jar opener does not work all that well. Instead of gripping the jar lid with non-slip rubber, it grips it with metal teeth. These sometimes slip off rather than gripping. And when they do grip, the usually leave quite a mark in the jar lid -- sometimes even cutting through very thin lids. Often takes 2-3 tries to open a single jar. Skip this product and instead buy a jar opener that grips the jar lid with rubber or a similar non-skid, non-damaging material.
