Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips Medium Cookie ScoopCustomer Review: Neatest thing for cookie bakers since chocolate chips Summary: 5 Stars
This cookie scoop from Oxo has improved my cookies markedly. You know how that last minute or two in the oven is critical--the difference between underdone, just right, and burnt-around-the-edges? Well, if your cookies aren't the same size to start, you're never going to hit that "just right" sweet spot. The big ones are underdone when the little ones are just right, or if the big ones are perfect, the small ones are burnt. I used to scoop cookie dough with a spoon, but this little gem of a tool is much more precise and neater to use.
Unlike cheaper scoops, the squeeze action is very smooth. It doesn't stick halfway through the squeeze, it doesn't require a lot of pressure, and the release is firm but not too firm--I used a scoop once that had a recoil like a rifle.
By the way, I have narrow hands but don't find the width of the handles to be a problem. Oxo is well known for its ergonomic designs, and this tool is no exception--I just baked 10 dozen cookies for a school event and my hands weren't tired at all. (My back is another matter!)
The dough releases well (even really sticky doughs like almond macaroons) and drops in a nice rounded ball into your hand. A quick roll to round off the bottom and it's ready for the cookie sheet.
The rated measure is 1-1/2 tablespoon (that's level, by the way) (well, of COURSE I checked for myself... I'm a baker, and that means "compulsive about measuring"). Oxo also makes a large and small scoop, but this one is the best size for the kitchen standard cookies: tollhouse, peanut butter, and the like.
I've thrown mine in the dishwasher several times with no problem. This is a good thing, because there are several crevices inside the handles and in the spring mechanism between them that could be a bit fiddly once the peanut butter dries.
Do yourself (and your cookie-eaters) a favor and pick up this gadget. I can't find a thing in the world wrong with it.
Customer Review: Works So Good My Neighbor Stole It! Summary: 5 Stars
You cannot go wrong with these scoops. Sturdily made and finely honed, these scoops will work for ages without fatiguing your hand.
Over the years, Oxo "Good Grip" products have come to make up most of the "cook's tools in my kitchen. The old plastic measuring cups and spoons and the cheap potato peeler were some of the first tools needing to be replaced. Noting Oxo's overall great ratings, I opted to pop the extra buck or two and have never looked back.
I'd always used the two spoon method to attempt to get cookies of the same size on the cookie sheet. I got pretty good at it, but there was always an amateur look to my finished cookies.
The idea of a cookie scoop never occurred to me until I complimented a friend saying that her cookies looked worthy of a high-end bake shop. Every cookie on the plate looked to be exactly the same size and to have cooked evenly. She shared the secret of the scoop to ensure consistency in the look and texture of her cookies.
Deciding to purchase one for myself, I looked cookie scoops up on Amazon.com and saw my favorite brand, Oxo Good Grips, listed and bought all three sizes. The medium is the one I use most. The large comes in handy for making oversize dessert cookies, but the small has mainly been relegated to occasional melon baller status.
I recently had to replace the medium sized one. Not because it wore out, it didn't. In fact, it was just as comfortable and springy as the day purchased. No, I loaned the darn thing to my neighbor over the holidays when she broke her cheaply made scoop in some kind of cookie making frenzy.
Perhaps she found herself coveting it too much to return it, it's that good, but I decided to rack it up to another loaned item lost and bought myself a new one. If at sometime she does attempt to return it, I'll just tell her to keep it and to go home and use it to make me some cookies!
Customer Review: A 'must have' if you bake cookies Summary: 5 Stars
A scoop is one of two things that most people baking cookies at home don't have but should have. Not only does it make sure that each cookie is the same size and cooked evenly, it makes baking more enjoyable. The thing I hated most about making cookies was trying to wrestle the batter off a spoon.
While most scoops are packaged either Small, Medium, or Large, a more meaningful term is the number stamped on the inside of the handle. The large scoop is a #20, meaning that it takes 20 scoops to equal one quart (think ice cream) the larger the number, the smaller the scoop. Some reviewers are saying that the Medium produces too large of a cookie. It really depends on your ingredients and technique. In my experience, using a #20 with a butter-based batter gives me flat, 4" in diameter cookies. However, chilling the batter in the fridge about 15 mins before scooping, they're poofier and about 3" across (which is the perfect size in my opinion, if you're handing out one cookie per person). If you're using margarine or shortening, expect the cookies to be smaller, but taller, because they melt at higher temperatures than butter.
Oh, the other "must have"? Parchment paper (not wax paper) instead of greasing the cookie sheet. This allows you to lift the cookies off the sheet as soon as you take them out of the oven, before they'd be firm enough to spatula onto a cooling rack. This prevents the bottom of the cookie from over-browing due to the carry-over heat from the sheet. You can also use a reusable Silpat (search Amazon) instead. A roll of parchment paper is about $5 at the grocery store and a Silpat is $20 on Amazon, so it might be worth it if you bake more often than just the holidays.
Customer Review: SWEET!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Ice cream scoop was producing to large of a cookie and the dough separate from the scoop that well. Exact opposite with this scoop. Rock solid construction and the dough comes out with a satisfying plop. Last bunch of cookies "ran", probably because of the high butter content, so I'm going to order smaller one or maybe just separate the dough more on the cookie sheet.
FWIW, I was concerned about the portion size. Turns out that this size is perfect for what I consider to be the optimum chocolate chip cookie complete with pecans. Granted what you consider to be optimum and I consider to be optimum may be different. Perhaps the best way to put it is that the chocolate chip cookies coming out of this scooper are a tight squeeze into a glass of milk.
For better or for worse, I'm doing more cookie baking (and saving more money and having better ingredients) than before I had the scoop. I used to bake pan cookies all the time as the ice cream scoop or tableware spoon just to long to plop the dough out. Isn't a problem any more. Bye-bye most pan cookies.
Customer Review: Makes making cookies easier Summary: 5 Stars
I really enjoy this product. The medium size works well with my chunky cookie dough full of nuts, chips, oatmeal, and dried fruits. It makes cookies a bit bigger then I used to make when I used a regular spoon to dish cookies out. It speeds up the process of panning cookies because I don't have to think about how much dough there is...scoop, scrape excess off on edge of bowl, plop onto tray. I can do it 24 times (2 trays of cookies) in about 2 minutes. I have several conditions which cause pain and leave me less then dexterous, and this scoop is super easy for me. The motion is smooth, and it doesn't take much strength.
The only downside I have seen is that I can't throw it straight from the cookie bowl to the dishwasher, because it just doesn't get clean. I have to pre-rinse it and make sure all the dough is out of the bowl of the scoop before washing it in the dishwasher. Not a huge deal though.
Overall, I really like this scoop, and see myself using it for many years to come.
