It seems like a totally frivolous purchase--like, do you REALLY need a gadget to spoon out cookie batter? What's wrong with the traditional two-spoon method? Well, this one keeps your hands clean and requires only one hand. You also end up with gloriously uniform cookies. You know how the recipe on the bag of chocolate chips says it makes sixty cookies? If you use this cookie scoop, you really get *exactly* sixty cookies.
The scoop is also handy for tiny scoops of ice cream or sorbet if you are making a fancy restaurant-like dessert.
There seem to be a few other brands on the market, but the OXO one is solid, easy to use, and durable. It's also extremely comfortable in the hand.

I've been making cookies old school for way too long! I was told by everyone to get a scoop, that it would make life so much easier- but I resisted. Finally I gave in this year and bought one. WOW- I should have given in years ago! it makes perfectly sized cookies, and drop biscuits. I was amazed at how nicely it released the dough and how quickly it cleaned up. This won't make mini cookies or the jumbo kind, but it makes an average size cookie- ya' know, the kind that you take to work, to school, to playgroup, the kind you give as presents during the holidays...it's the perfect size for that. First things first: my cookies turned out bigger than 2-3/4 inches. I'd say they were about 3-1/2 inches (using an oatmeal chocolate chip recipe, with scoop filled to level). I didn't get many complaints, but usually prefer a smaller cookie. I like the scoop so much, however, that I will just get a smaller one from the same manufacturer.
This is my first cookie scoop, and I was very pleased with how easy it was to use. I had switched from making drop cookies to only bars, as cookies can be such a hassle to make. With the scoop, it's incredibly simple to make uniform cookies with little mess. The action of the release mechanism is very smooth.

I never thought I'd need to use a cookie scoop. But know I don't know how I lived without it.
It prevents over baking of the larger cookies because it keeps each cookie the same size. I love it because I don't have to worry about scraping off the spoon with my hands. Then finding something to scrap my hands off. It makes distributing the cookie dough onto the tray much more efficient.
Scoop, squeeze, done.
Cleaning it is really easy too. Dough doesn't get stuck anywhere.
I use it for cookie dough and cupcake batter primarily. But I'll find any excuse to use it. Ice cream? Meatballs? Oreo truffles?

Scooping up spoonfuls of cookie dough and pushing it off the spoon onto the pan is my least favorite part of baking cookies. Don't ask me why: it's just one of those things. This item seemed inexpensive enough, so I put it on my wishlist and got it for Christmas. (My children will do whatever it takes to encourage me to make my chocolate chip cookies!)
This product is a godsend. It scoops up perfect, uniform balls of cookie dough. The dough slips right out of the scoop with a quick squeeze of the handle. It speeds the process up CONSIDERABLY, with no goopy fingers and all that. Well worth the price, in my opinion.
