Customer Review: Spill proof yes, but complicated mechanism breeds mold.

For the first few weeks this is the perfect travel mug. Absolutely spill proof and decent heat retention. Then a few weeks into your relationship, you go to take a sip of your coffee and chunks of mold and slime touch your lips. I thought I had been giving my mug a good cleaning, but when I pried open the pop-top lid mechanism, I was horrified by the accumulation of gunk. It's impossible to clean. I just spent an hour with 10 Q-tips attempting to stick them up into the unknown voids and crevasses of plastic gaskets and sealing mechanisms, only to pull out black moldy sliminess. It's bathtub drain stuff, my friends - stay away. I write this because I know OXO can do better. Even an easy way to disassemble the top for cleaning would be a huge improvement. I bought and used this coffee mug, and I do not recommend it. The only reason is because my latte or tea tastes and smells like plastic whenever I use this mug. This is made of plastic (polycarbonate) and gives the chemical taste and smell to my drink. Polycarbonates leach hormone-disrupting chemicals into your beverage and also they can not be recycled easily. If you do not want to risk your health and use a more environmentally benign product, just use stainless steel travel mugs. I would go with the stainless steel version of the same brand. The design is nice and the seal works pretty well.
