Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips Pro Swivel PeelerCustomer Review: I thought my four-year-old Zyliss Swivel Peeler was great...then I met the OXO Good Grips I-Series Swivel Peeler Summary: 5 Stars
After seeing a review on peelers on America's Test Kitchen in 2006, I went on Amazon to purchase the top rated OXO peeler. However, I'm a fan of Zyliss products and after reading comparable and high reviews on Amazon about the Zyliss, I decided to skip the OXO peeler in favor of the Zyliss because back then, the Zyliss Swivel Peeler went for $5.99 and the OXO was twice the price. I was happy with the Zyliss until I recently noticed a pain in my left wrist (I'm right-handed so my pain is in the hand that holds the fruit/vegetable).
I saw the price drop at Target on the OXO peeler, but the new model was made of plastic so I went on Amazon to see if the i-series metal version was still available (I didn't want to purchase the plastic model). After getting the e-mail 4-for-3 promo from Amazon, I decided to finally take the plunge and purchase the OXO i-series. At almost double the price of my Zyliss angled swivel peeler from 4 years ago, I'm glad I forked over the $11.99 for this OXO peeler. I cannot describe what a difference it was to use the i-series OXO peeler.
I quickly peeled carrots with the i-Series OXO, a task that was a waste of time with the Zyliss Angled Swivel Peeler. With the Zyliss, the carrot peel would get caught up in the blade and it only removed a small skinny strip of carrot at a time. With the i-Series OXO, the blade smoothly glided down the carrot removing a large strip at a time.
I mindlessly and quickly peeled several potatoes with a lot of ease and absolutely no pain in my left wrist. Then I decided to pull out my Zyliss to compare the feel and a bit of pain was felt in my left wrist after a few seconds. I couldn't figure out what the issue was (I think it might be because the Zyliss peeler is angled, or maybe it's just simple sharpness of the blade) as I switched back and forth between the Zyliss and the i-Series OXO, but I know the i-Series OXO felt nicer to use.
My only qualm with the OXO is that I have to turn my wrist or flip the peeler over in order to use the eye remover. I'm used to flicking at the eye away from me and the Zyliss was designed to continue to reinforce this preference. When I am gripping the i-Series OXO, in order to remove the eye without switching my wrist position or the peeler's position in my hand, I have to dig at the potato inwards towards my body. The Zyliss made removing the eye much easier since the eye remover faces away from the blade already. I don't know if a lot of other people prefer this functionality or not, but maybe if they do, OXO might consider changing this aspect of the peeler. If they do, I will obviously be purchasing another peeler from OXO! I should have trusted America's Test Kitchen from the beginning.
Note: The Zyliss Swivel Peeler I have used was angled. This model has now been discontinued. I have not used Zyliss' new Smoothglide Peeler so I cannot determine if the newer model (not angled) resolves my pain issue or not.
