Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips Pro Y-PeelerCustomer Review: Peel Your Favorite Fruits and Vegetables with Efficiency and Ease Summary: 5 Stars
Oxo Good Grips I- Series Peeler is an excellent kitchen aid that helps make peeling common fruits and vegetables easier and more efficient. This peeler is much better and safer than using a knife and it takes most of the work out of the task.
What initially attracted me to this peeler and convinced me to select it over others is the large black handle. In the past, many peelers had small handles and were difficult to grip. It was common for these peelers to slip and, sometimes, a cut finger would result. But there is no such problem with this peeler. This Oxo peeler has an oversized handle that fits any size hands and you can grip it up close or hold it further back. Either way, your skin is well protected. It even has a non- slip surface that is designed to keep your hand and fingers away from the blade, minimizing the chance for being cut.
Now, let's talk about the cutting ability. I have found that this Oxo peeler is very effective at slicing its way through foods and what I like best is that you don't have to go over the same part of the fruit or vegetable. All it takes is one swipe to remove the peeling. The blade seems to conform to the shape of your favorite fruit or vegetable and efficiently removes the peeling quickly. It also minimizes the amount of food that is lost because you don't have to go back over the food item and slice again, which inevitably removes more of the food you want to keep.
Besides the peeling ability, the built in blemish remover is also very handy. This extra feature makes it easy to achieve the perfect peeling job with minimal effort. All you do is scoop out the blemish which, again, minimizes the loss of actual food. If you use a knife to remove blemishes, you have to cut away a large amount of the food to remove the blemish completely. But there is no need to worry with the Oxo Good Grip I- Series Y Peeler. The blemish remover scoops these problems away in seconds.
I'm not a chef by any means and I limit my time spent in the kitchen. But I can easily see the value in a kitchen tool like the Oxo Good Grip I- Series Y Peeler. It is an excellent kitchen gadget with great cutting ability, safety, and durability. The price might be a little higher than others, but the excellent quality is worth the money.
Customer Review: Great product for those tough-to-peel veggies! Summary: 5 Stars
I recently had occasion to prepare several varieties of winter squash (butternut etc.) and found peeling them to be one of the toughest kitchen chores I've ever tried. My trusty straight carrot peeler was not up to the task - in fact, I ruined one of them because that flimsy blade simply crumpled under the pressure. Peeling with a knife risked sliced fingers and wasted a lot of the flesh of the squash.
On a friend's advice, I sprung for this peeler, but I really doubted it would do the job.
It arrived, I pulled out a squash, ran the peeler down the side of it.... and with just a bit of firm pressure, the Oxo peeler shaved away a thin slice of the peel. It took me less than 5 minutes to do that entire squash - where it took me a half hour to do one using the now-defunct carrot peeler, a paring knife, sore shoulders and quite a few unprintable words.
It also works far better on things like potatoes and beets. I'm definitely a happy owner!
By the way - the one thing I do NOT love it for is plain old carrots. I can zip through peeling a carrot using the lightweight carrot peeler (a new one, not the one I mangled on the squash) in just a few seconds. The angle of a straight peeler is better for carrots than this Y-shaped one.
A warning when peeling potatoes / beets / other hand-held items: I've found it's safer to put the vegetable on a cutting board, and brace it with my left hand while peeling with the right. When I held it in my left hand, I found it a bit too easy to slip and take out a chunk of my skin (ouch!).
Customer Review: Awesome! Summary: 5 Stars
I love this peeler! I've had mine for about 10 months, I use it all the time & it's just wonderful. I've used it on potatoes, carrots, cucumbers, zucchini, Asian radishes, etc. The blade is still as sharp as it was when I first bought it, it only takes a couple of minutes to peal a massive amount of items, the little thing on the side is really handy for getting those 'eyes' out of potatoes, it's comfortable for your hand & I mean what else could you ask for? :) This is just an awesome little gadget, I use it all the time & I just love it! I would recommend it to anyone.
March 15, 2009: Just wanted to update you all.. It's been about a year and a half since I've had this peeler and it STILL works great!!! I haven't had to change the blade, yet, either!!! NO rust or anything! It's still in brand-new condition. I'm very impressed with the product! I would definitely recommend this peeler, you'll love it!
The only issue that I've had with my peeler is that for peeling smaller vegetables, it can be kind-of difficult, because you could peel your finger along with the vegetable.. If you're careful, then no worries, but if you like to just hurry up & get it done & over with, then you may want to check out the swivel peeler, instead, because it seems like it'd be easier to handle with smaller vegetables. I'm getting one myself! But the Y peeler is pretty sweet!
Customer Review: Getta Grip already... Summary: 5 Stars
I love this peeler. If you use it, you'll understand the accolade! It's easy to hold, has a very comfortable grip, and doesn't cause muscle fatigue. Peeling with one of those long, thin peelers makes my hand ache way before I've defrocked enough spuds for the salad or apples for the pie. Anyway, this weekend I peeled about five pounds of yukon golds without whining, slicing off a part of a finger, pretending to faint, or setting a diversion fire in the den. The peeler belonged to a friend; I not only commandeered it for the potatoes, but also unobtrusively tucked it in my purse when the coast was clear. The Oxo Good Grips i-series Y Peeler (just ask for it by name if you want people to look at you funny) works sliding up or sliding down, which makes for some much-needed variety in a very monotonous chore. It was so easy to use, after I did my stint with the potatoes, I volunteered to make zucchini, carrot and cucumber ribbons for use as garnish and for inclusion in the salad (even though I don't consider any of that trio to be "food" in the sense of tasting good or being something I would ever eat). In summary, unless things pick up a bit, this peeler may well be the highpoint of my summer.
Customer Review: A pleasure to use -- worthwhile kitchen tool investment Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this just before Christmas so that I could make sweet potatoes from scratch. My conventional straight peeler just wasn't doing the job anymore, and it was time for a change. So I took the advice of tv chef/author Alton Brown and hunted up this Y peeler for my potato and apple peeling needs. It looks like I made a wise purchase.I don't know how this works, but the Y shape design on a peeler seems more comfortable for this task. The handle is made of Oxo's typical "good grips" material, so it was comfortable and didn't slip. The blade holder part, which has a little divot scoop for removing the eyes, appears to be high quality cast aluminum or stainless. Every part fits together seamlessly. The blade is set in snugly and cut smoothly though the potato skins, at just the right depth. It was a pleasure to use such a handsome and well-designed tool. I understand that this type of peeler may not be ideal for peeling thinner skinned items like carrots, so it seems I will be looking up Oxo's straight peeler now. This one however is probably the last potato peeler I will ever need to buy. -Andrea, aka Merribelle
