Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips Smooth Edge Can Opener

Customer Review: Never going back
Summary: 5 Stars

I read a review of this smooth edge can opener and decided we needed one for our daily pet foot can opening ceremony. We had cut our fingers more than once on pet food cans and I was looking for something different. I've noticed two big differences with this opener compared to a standard one: one doesn't cut one's fingers because all edges are smooth, and it handles mildly deformed cans better than our old "typical" can opener. We've had a lot of can openers over the years, both hand and electric, and I can honestly say that this one is the best one we've had. It took us a couple of times to figure out how to use the built in mini-jaws/tweezer/grips to remove the cut top but that was the only user interface issue we ran into. For the first week or so we collected the tops of the pet food cans because we were sure that there must be some useful thing we could do with them. :) We've gone back to just putting them in the recycle bin along with the rest of the can. :) We won't go back to the old style of can opener!

Customer Review: Kind to my fingers--and little animals!
Summary: 5 Stars

The OXO Smooth Edge can opener is, in my opinion, a wonderful product. Not only does it appear to be safer to USE than most, but I was thrilled to find that the resulting (opened) can and lid have no sharp edges that can harm my fingers--and little animals who might be rummaging through garbage bags in some dump.

Because I am an animal lover, I typically take cans that I open, rinse them out and then stuff towel paper in them afterwards, before throwing them in the garbage. Now, I don't have to do that.

Figuring that other animal lovers would also like to know about this product, I wrote to the OXO people last year and suggested that they market the product on that basis. Public sentiment against the cruelty of animals is at an all-time high. And we do so love our pets. Why shouldn't the OXO company benefit from being able to promote their exceptional product as one that is not only safer for people, but also animal friendly? OXO, thank you for your product.

Customer Review: Get rid of your electric can opener
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had this can opener for about a year. I bought it to take with me when I had to work at the football concession stand. It is very hard to open cheese and coffee cans with an electric opener so I got this. After I used it the the first time it has never gone back because I do not want to lose it. The 6 mothers and 2 dads that were working with me also went crazy over it. There are no rough edges on the cans to cut your fingers on and there sre no small metal shavings falling down in the can of whatever you are opening. There is no rim left around the top so you can easily get a spatula in there and clean the can out completely. If you don't use all of the can right away ,you have a nice lid to put back on the can. It is unbelievable. At first it was a little hard to figure out because I had thrown the package away. I thought I had bought just your basic turn can opener, but once I figured it out I was blown away. I have ordered 12 of these to give as Christmas presents.

Customer Review: Great for Rheumatoid Arthritis
Summary: 5 Stars

My sister has rheumatoid arthritis and has great difficulty performing manual tasks with her hands. I purchased this Oxo Good Grips Smooth Edge Can Opener for her. The can opener is easy to attach to the can and the handles do not need to be squeezed closed while operating. The large knob is easy to grip and is easy to turn. No problems knowing when you've completed the trip around the circumference of the can as you can feel a let-up in the resistance. When you feel this, just do a half turn backwards. The can opener easily disengages and the lift lifts right off. If you wish, you can use the attached lid opener to help remove the lid. The edges are clean and there is nothing sharp to cut your fingers. I have a touch of carpal tunnel syndrome and have put one of these can openers on my holiday wish list. I imagine that it would also be a good tool to have for children who like to help out in the kitchen - easy and safe for little hands to use.

Customer Review: Brilliant little device...
Summary: 5 Stars

To be totally honest, when I got his, I looked at it and said, 'Now what do I do with us?' Being an idiot, I just kept looking at it trying to figure out how to make it work. I don't believe in reading directions, so everything usually takes me about 3 times as long to ever be able to use.

Finally I figured it out and I love it. Turning the handle is as easy as it gets. There is no mess at all. Smooth all around. When you have cut the lid off, you have a tiny little 'grabber' that you clamp on the lid and pull it off. As other reviewers have already said, you are cutting the lid off below the line and not cutting the lid through and then off.

It is simple to use when you get the hang of it. My wife used to always have me open the cans because you have to sometimes work to get it open, but she uses the OXO because it is simple, smooth and mess free. Good purchase for us!
