Summary: 4 Stars

It does what it says it does. Easy, eficient can opening with exposed edges that do not cut.

Customer Review: The Shine Fades
Summary: 3 Stars

We have had one of these for several years, and overall it does what it is supposed to do, but there are some things you might want to know before you decide to buy.

The Good:
When it's new, it works every bit as well as so many other reviewers have stated. It cuts cleanly and almost effortlessly, leaving a smooth edge that won't cut you. We had a problem with our first opener (more on that later), and OXO did the right thing and replaced it free of charge, including shipping!

The Bad:
It's rather bulky. It took up so much room in our gadget drawer that we finally relegated it to our countertop tool canister, where it easily consumes about a third of the available space. The reason it's so easy to crank is because the gear ratio of the crank to the cutting head is so high. You have to turn the crank handle A LOT to go all the way around a lid. If you have to open several cans, you might find yourself getting forearm cramps. Last, but certainly not least, when the cutting head dulls (after about a year) you will find it increasingly difficult to cut through the lid all the way around. You have to squeeze the handle harder and harder to get it to cut. Finally, it becomes almost impossible to cut any cans cleanly. You'll probably have to bend the partially-still-attached lid to get out contents. OXO designed it in such a way that the rotating cutter head is not easily replaceable. Planned obsolescence? When we complained about this growing problem is when they sent us a replacement, but the replacement is getting to the end of it's blade life now. With a second replacement in our near future, we're looking at other options.

Customer Review: Good can opener
Summary: 3 Stars

Through my two years of constant use, I have found that the opener does not always open cans quickly and consistently. It works like a charm for some cans - one round of cutting and you are done. Yet for some cans you need to cut a few rounds to open the lids. Frustratingly, quite often (maybe 1 or 2 times out of 10) you just can not open the lids regardless of how many rounds of cutting you apply. I figure that this is probably not due to how strong you grip the can when you cut, it is likely due to the fact that cans from various manufacturers are not sealed uniformly at the top edge for this opener to be effective consistently. The opener is a good nonetheless for specific purposes, such as if you use only a portion of the can and intend to keep the rest in the refrigerator with the lid, or if you simply do not like to have your food touched by cut lids. Otherwise, I keep a swing away opener handy for quicker work.

Customer Review: 1st Disappointment with OXO
Summary: 3 Stars

It took a little while for me to figure out how to use this product. When I finally set it on the can and started to feel some resistance I didn't even realize I was opening the can. You have to actually "pry" the can top off. While it works ok for normal every day size cans, I busted every knuckle I have when I started opening up the large club or bulk size cans. The instead of moderate resistance, I found I had to practically force the crank to get the blade to cut through the lip on the larger cans. Because the lip is thicker on the large cans, I had to go around twice in some cases. I have always loved Good Grips and was so thrilled to move up from my less expensive, trusty original Good Grips $10 can opener. My recommendation? Just buy the cheaper one and save your knuckles. Between the hassle of a harder crank and the difficulty of use - it just isn't worth the trouble.

Customer Review: No sharp edges on the can, but...
Summary: 3 Stars

Watch out for the edges on the packaging! Given that there is no such thing as good clamshell packaging, this thing came in what is some of the worst I ever encountered. Thick, stiff, fully contoured, lethally edged when cut open. Get a clue, Oxo--ditch the entry-proof plastic.

As for the can opener itself, it seems fine, but a full review will have to wait until I get the bandages off my fingers. I guess I can say it will probably work for the handicapped since I could open a can with it just now, but I don't think products for use by the handicapped are actually supposed to turn previously fully functional people into the handicapped. ;) I'd suggest buying some other well-reviewed edge-opening bead-cutting can opener if you have a choice. Unfortunately, none of the pictures of this one showed you'd need a chain saw to get to it when delivered.
