Excellent wooden hammer! Much more rugged and sturdy than I thought it was going to be by just looking at the pictures on Amazon! I'm using the flat end to pop open garlic cloves with little effort. Works all too well. No more need to peel garlic anymore. One whack with the hammer and off comes the garlic skins! Great product for the price! I'm well pleased with the purchase.
Update June 2, 2009: Well, I've had this hammer for over two years and it still is holding up. The handle did slip out from the head, but was easy to glue back together. Apparently, when it was first constructed, it was held together by pressure of the handle locking into the wooden head and after a few years of use, it lost it's hold. Never fear, a little "Liquid Nails" is all it took to put it back together. It still handles the meat and garlic cloves just fine when I pound them. Should get another two years out of it at the rate it's all going. I still highly recommend this purchase for both price and quality of endurance. What a great buy!!!
Update December 6, 2009: My God, after nearly three years, I don't think this hammer is ever going to die! I keep whacking away with it and it keeps handling the stress and abuse of all the whacking. Still keeps those garlic cloves opening and is great for tenderizing the meat before cooking. I just soak it in a little Joy dishwashing liquid and bleach, in a sink full of water when I let my dishes soak to disinfect it and it proposes no health hazzard after 3 years of steady use. Not bad! In fact, all the wood spoons and hammers I bought off Amazon are great! Check my reviews for the other wooden spoons! Great buy for anyone you know who loves to cook in the kitchen. Buy it as a Christmas gift for your mother or grandmother who love to cook. Heck, I'm male and love to cook in the kitchen after years of watching Emeril Legase on the Food Channel. I learned allot and now cook like a pro! I don't know what tree they made this hammer from, but man, it was one tough tree I must say! Like the old Timex commercials, if your are my age and if you grew up in the 1960's and 70's, "It takes a lick'n and still keeps on tick'n"! Happy Holidays!
Update June 24, 2010: Just stopping by to add a new review and I thought I'd let you know the old wooden hammer and wooden spoons are still hanging in there another year later. I think these wooden utensils are going to outlive me at the rate things are going. I think it is best to say these are not just a good buy, but a great buy for the price! I keep whacking those garlic cloves and use the spoons for all kinds of things in my kitchen. Great, great value after all these years. No complaints at all for the money! Have a happy summer!
Update March 7, 2011: Well it takes a licking and keeps on pounding, or was that some other commercial my generation heard that expression from? Oh, yes, it was Timex...takes a licking but keeps on ticking. Well this hammer doesn't tick, but it sure keeps taking the pounding. I don't think petrified wood could have done better than this hammer over the years. Its well over four years since I purchased it and its still holding up to all my pounding. What a deal this has turned out to be! I don't think I'll have the heart to throw my old friend the hammer away, should the day come I do have to get rid of it. Seems we've become old friends in the kitchen all through the years! Still is great for opening up the garlic cloves and other items that need a hammer with a flat side and a serrated side for tenderizing. Still no complaints! Such a deal (in my best Jewish voice you know ;-))
