I've read through reviews of this and a similarly-designed Oxo jar opener, but have not been able to find one which tells how to operate this device. Sure, it would seem obvious: hold the jar upright with one hand; bring the opener, teeth downward, over the jar lid; twist. But when used in this fashion the tool failed me almost every time. It took too much force to get the teeth to engage properly, and the device would slip off the lid, with the teeth cutting my hand which was holding the jar.
Common sense would seem to dictate that I throw it away, but bull-headedness prevented me from doing so. I kept thinking that I was the problem. After all, would a company design a product that not only failed to function as advertised, but injured the user? Answer: yes.
But one day I tried using it in a different way, and since then it has worked every time and without injury. Here's how: Lay the jar opener on the counter with the flat side down and teeth facing upwards; upend the jar and insert the lid as far back into the opener as you can; twist. If you're strong enough that you can make this work using one hand on the jar and one hand on the handle of the opener, good for you. I'm not, so since I have to use both hands to grasp the jar in order to break the seal, the opener wants to rotate while I'm twisting. To prevent that, I just position myself up against the counter so that the handle hits my hip and stops. Lid twists, seal breaks. Success!
Oh, wait! If you forget to IMMEDIATELY turn the jar upright as soon as the lid starts to move, and finish opening it in the upright position, any liquid in the jar will be obeying the laws of gravity and leaking out onto you and the counter. So don't forget this last little step.
Hope this helps someone. And no, I don't recommend anyone buy this miserable device. But if you already own one, now you know how to make it work.
