Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oxo Good Grips Food Mill

Customer Review: it is ok but...
Summary: 3 Stars

it is an ok mill. Steamed carrots are a little tough to push thu, but i ended up griding with with the coarse plate first, then the fine for babybood.

so it works.

one thing i am really astonished with, and why i give it a 3 instead of 5, is that they did not think it prudent to make a "scraper wire" on the bottom, so now you have to lift up the mill and manually scape off the food bits, so you can work at a good speed.

another issue is that the legs are mounted in such a way that the nicely shaped "i promise to fit in many pots" body actually does not - the nubs of the hinges are in the way.

Customer Review: Love this mill just wish it was bigger!
Summary: 4 Stars

We do a lot of home canning and preserving and purchased this mill to help with some of the chores associated with putting away pumpkin butter, grape butter, pumpkin puree and other foods. This was the only tool we found that helped get rid of the seeds and save the pulp of the grapes for our grape spread. We also own one of the large food strainers (Victorio or Roma type model) and this did a better job than that large, expensive strainer for that kind of work.

Things I really like:
--the "legs" of the strainer on the pot are coated with a rubberized surface that helps to keep them from slipping off the edge of the pot you are using it over. The handle seems to have the same coating and is pleasant to hold.
--also with the legs, they fold for storage, but I have found that folding them down around the sides of a 4-cup pyrex measuring cup also helps to hold it stable while using it.
--I like the white enamel (I think that's what it is) coating on the outside of the pot. Very attractive.
--Easy to clean. If I clean this immediately after using, I can practically just rinse it in hot water and let it dry and it looks great.
--handle assembly is cleverly designed and feels sturdy and secure when using it.
--comes with 3 disks for different jobs. We use the most coarse disk for pumpkin and apples and it works beautifully. (Note, we do take the seeds out of our pumpkins before cooking and straining). We used the medium disk with our grapes this year and it did a nice job, but a few seeds did sneak through. Next year we will try the fine disk.

My ONLY quibble with this piece of equipment is that it is not bigger. As I mentioned above, it fits nicely over a 4-cup pyrex measuring cup. I'd be thrilled if it was larger. The pot itself probably doesn't hold more than 4 cups. You *can* use it over a large pot, the legs will simply hold it there for you. It's the size of the pot itself I am talking about.

Customer Review: Excellent food mill. This is the one!

I bought this mill after trying it out alongside the All Clad, and after having read the bad reviews of other high-end mills. Unlike the All-Clad, which has a fixed knob, the knob on the Oxo crank turns independently of the crank, so that you can grip it while turning without losing the skin off the palm of your hand. It's quieter than the All-clad, which makes an annoying scraping sound, and it has those awesome retractable legs that let you rest it over any bowl. With the All-Clad, you have to either use All-clad pots or hold the whole thing in your other arm as you crank away with that horrible knob. So far, I have made amazing mashed potatoes and fresh heirloom tomato Bloody Mary's. The fine mesh seive held back the seeds and skins of the tomato perfectly, which some mills won't do. If you like seeds and skin in your sauces, just use the medium seive. The disks are VERY easy to switch out, just click the latch. Lastly, the Oxo is cheaper. If you want a food mill, this is the one!

Customer Review: My first food mill
Summary: 5 Stars

Since it is the only food mill I have used I have nothing to compare it with. I have used it twice to make large batches of tomato sauce from fresh tomatoes and it worked great, was easy to use and was very easy to clean.

Customer Review: highly recommended
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this mill with the intentions of making baby food. So far it has worked great for banana puree, mango and other soft, ripe fruits. I would recommend the product over the smaller, strictly-for-baby-food mills because of its capacity for making large batches, and for it's higher quality/durability. It is fun and easy to use, and it makes a great tomato puree for a most excellent marinara!
