Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Oxo Good Grips Meat Tenderizer

Customer Review: OK, but not great
Summary: 2 Stars

This does the job fine, but if I had it to do over again, I would have gotten an all stainless one. Not being able to put this in the dishwasher is a huge drawback. My two favorite words are "dishwasher safe," but to not be able to put something that touches raw poultry in the diswasher is insult to injury. I am pricing others and it looks like I'll be dropping at least $18.

Customer Review: Great Functionality, Not Dishwasher Safe
Summary: 4 Stars

I am yet another fan of OXO Good Grips products. The meat tenderizer is another good product. It is very ergonomic, and it's heavy/solid so that you don't have to pound as hard as you would with more lightweight tenderizers.

I don't like the fact that you can't put it in the dishwasher, but really, scrub it with some anti-bacterial dish soap and you're all set. After shopping at several home product stores in search of a tenderizer, I came back to the OXO Good Grips because I found it the best, in spite of not being able to put it in the dishwasher.

Customer Review: Hardware store mallet works better
Summary: 3 Stars

This will make a cubed steak, but frankly, a hardware store wooden mallet, washed in dilute bleach and kept clean, is more effective for making thin cutlets. I asked for a hardware store mallet, but my well-meaning spouse thought I'd like this better instead. I don't. It isn't heavy enough to really make a dent on a big chicken breast and I don't need the tenderizer part.

Customer Review: Excellent product except for one thing...
Summary: 3 Stars

I do not want to be washing a product contacting raw meat by hand. Because aluminum discolors you really need to hand wash it... My solution was to cover the meat with several layers of plastic wrap. This keeps the meat from getting on the unit and so I am okay with hand washing it.

That said I have only used the pounding side, not the tenderizing side. I think it would probably work with the plastic wrap but not as well.

This is a good and very reasonably priced unit, as most of oxo's are. I find their handles a bit odd feeling but alot of people really do find them comfortable so I think that is just me. For the cost, I am willing to put up with the handle.

If I had a choice and could have just gotten a unit with the flat side I would have, this is a bit big and oddly shaped for storage. But I find it a useful thing to have so I put up with the storage issue.

In general, I admire oxo's line for putting out reasonablly priced kitchen gadgets. There are alot of high end lines that put out the same items but don't work appreciably (or any) better than this line. If your new to cooking or find yourself needing a gadget for a certain recipe and are unsure that you will be using it again...this is a great company to check out first.

Customer Review: the best you're gonna get
Summary: 5 Stars

This tenderizer is the best that I have ever worked with. It has the perfect weight to pound meat, or chicken, and it is very easy to keep clean. It outdoes any synthetic, or wooden tenderizer and there will never be any residue on the stainless steel.
